San Blas, Nayarit, is a world renowned destination for bird watching, with good reason. Boasting over 300 species in its diverse ecosystems, with 400+ species having been counted in the area's diverse ecosystems which include mangroves, estuaries, wetlands, tropical forests, and coastal areas.
Bird enthusiasts can spot rare and endemic species such as the San Blas Jay, Black-throated Magpie-Jay, and Mexican Woodnymph, while seasonal migrations from October to April in which over 80% of the migratory bird population of North America stops in the area bringing thousands of birds with it.

One of the rarest birds seen in the San Blas, Nayarit area is the Mexican Woodnymph (Thalurania ridgwayi). This elusive hummingbird is endemic to western Mexico and is considered near-threatened due to habitat loss. It is rarely seen, making it a prized find for birders visiting the region.
